4 œuvres présentées au musée Grand Curtius à Liège du 23/10/2020 au 28/02/2021 dans le cadre de l’exposition ‘Innerspace Vol.6 // exhibition

La proposition ‘d’Innerspace’ de réfléchir, et construire un travail artistique sur le Grand Curtius et ses collections… m’avait conduit à essayer de faire un ‘reset’ sur ‘ma’ perception de l’œuvre du sculpteur Jean Delcour ; super star le plus liégeois du 17me siècle…, peut-être le plus connu dans le panthéon artistique de l’histoire des arts en Wallonie.

Je ne pensais pas à ce moment qu’une pandémie brutale, allait retourner en quelques jours toute notre société et disloquer nos ’humanités’, de l’achat compulsif du papier toilette…jusqu’à la mort la plus solitaire dans des hôpitaux surchargés de malades. La solitude imposée par la ‘distanciation sociale’ (quel mot !) et l’enfermement ‘volontaire’ des malades (je vivais moi-même la maladie et ses souffrances) donnait à ces moments des dimensions surréalistes.

Nos sociétés européennes ont vécu des pandémies atroces dans leurs histoires tel la peste ; et notamment au 16me et 17me siècle…ce qui me rapprocha émotionnellement dans mes pensées d’Holbein le Jeune, de son ‘Christ Mort’ et de Jean Delcour et du ‘Christ gisant’ que pensaient-ils ces artistes, de tout ça à leurs époques… comme moi ? une impression profonde de détresse et d’enfermement qui pousserait à un désespoir infini, sur fond d’abandon, d’impuissance médicale et de fatalité.

Il ne restait plus qu’à retrouver le matériel le plus essentiel à la peinture, depuis la nuit des temps : le support, la couleur, les pinceaux… une main ‘recroquevillée’ dans un ultime geste de douloureuse crispation, d’espoir ou de rédemption ?

The “Innerspace” proposal to ‘think’, and build an artistic project on the Grand Curtius and its collections … led me to try to do a “reset” on “my” perception of the work of the sculptor Jean Delcour; the most Liege super star of the 17th century …, perhaps the best known in the artistic pantheon of the history of the arts in Wallonia.

I did not think at the time that a brutal pandemic, would turn over in a few days our whole society and dislocate our ‘humanities’, from the compulsive purchase of toilet paper … to the most lonely death in hospitals overloaded with sick. The loneliness imposed by ‘social distancing’ (what a word!) And the ‘voluntary’ confinement of the sick (I was experiencing at that moment the disease and its suffering) gave these moments surreal dimensions.

Our European societies have experienced atrocious pandemics in their histories such as the plague; and especially in the 16th and 17th century … which brought me emotionally closer in my thoughts to Holbein the Younger, his ‘Christ Mort’ and Jean Delcour and the ‘Christ recumbent’ what did these artists think, of all that to their eras… like me? a deep feeling of distress and confinement that would lead to infinite despair, against a background of abandonment, medical helplessness and fatality.

It only remained to find the most essential material for painting, since the dawn of time: the support, the color, the brushes … a hand ‘curled up’ in a final gesture of painful tension, hope or redemption?
