Paperwork // exhibition
9th-31st of March. Winter exhibition in Oostende. With Yves Beaumont, Hans Defer, Luc Mabille, Sigrid Tanghe, Hanne van Rompaey and Lisa Wilkens.
At work one morning in my studio, I was listening to an album (‘So Far’) by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and in particular a title ‘Find the Cost of Freedom’ (a song committed in reaction to the shooting on the campus of Kent State University in Ohio 1970 where several students were killed.)
The chorus goes like this:
‘Find the cost of freedom, buried in the ground,
Mother Earth will swallow you,
Lay your body down.’
It was the revelation of the birth of my painting, these words gave me all the “necessary strength” and the “direction” of my composition.
The parallel with Mother Earth: suspended in her suffering, ravined and worn down, parched by the sun… tormented by violent storms, almost empty of any possibility of ‘giving birth to’ life… all this the results of our actions not respectful of our vital cradle.
Is it too late…?
